  2. Get 400 g canned crushed tomatoes

My version might not taste like your grandmother's, but I promise that it tastes damn good. Typically in Chana Masala both garam masala and curry powder (or the individual spices of which it consist) are used. That being said, this is not such a bad recipe. Flavorful, not too spicy, and extremely satisfying.

Steps to make Chana masala:
  1. Heat oil in a pot over medium heat and fry the garam masala until fragrant.
  2. Stir in the chiles, tomatoes, chickpeas, garlic powder, onion powder, dried ginger and enough water to cover everything. Simmer 20-30 minutes, until it thickens.
  3. Add salt and lemon/vinegar to taste, stir in some cilantro leaves.
  4. Serve over basmati rice.

It is one of the most popular Indian dishes, whether its in India or in the western world. In Delhi though, we usually make Chole, which is very similar to Chana Masala but uses a special blend of spices. Both are made with white chickpeas but chana masala is made using basic everyday Indian spices. Chana masala is an Indian dish made with chickpeas (chana) and garam masala. Chickpeas are the type of legume I use the most, especially to make hummus and falafel , but also to prepare other delicious recipes like chana masala.
